Case Study of a Winning Design

Piilani Place

OVERVIEW
CHA Development of Sunnyvale, California was creating South Maui's new premier retail and office condominium center. The property includes three stories of Class A offices and retail shops. Glick Design was chosen to design its graphic identity and print collateral.

BACKGROUND
The clients were very involved with the architectural design of the building. Their goal was to be on the cutting edge of style and technology in their specific marketplace. Glick Design studied the blueprint elevations, renderings and researched various architectural stylistic influences while developing the new graphic identity. Several identity Piilani Placeconcepts were developed and presented. The winning design keyed off a mirror orientation of the double P letters in the name. A four-sided diamond shape was created from the pairs of letters. A much understated and simplified art deco design approach evolved that was basically in keeping with the building concept.

A color palette of grey and teal complemented the interior design. Stylized supporting typography provided a visual

base for the design mark. Further, an embossed version of the design was used as a architectural detail on the building exteriors.

SUMMARY
This graphic identity design was immediately approved by the client and employed in their web site and print materials. It was deemed to be instrumental in setting the tone for the marketing imagery.

2007 American Graphic Design AwardThis design received a 2007 American Graphic Design Award as well as a 2007 Pele Award of Merit in the graphic identity category.
